Daly's new role as chairman of Oireachtas children's committee

CORK South West FG Deputy Jim Daly has been appointed as Chair of the Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs, by An Taoiseach Enda Kenny TD.

Speaking after the appointment, the former teacher said he was honoured to have been appointed.

‘Having played a key role in 2012 Children’s Rights Referendum, I have always taken a huge interest in children’s issues and the rights of young people. The passing of the Children’s Referendum was my personal highlight of the 31st Dáil as it was hugely important in securing rights for children in State care who have no voice. Now I look forward to progressing children’s rights in the 32nd Dáil in my new role.’

He added that in the early days of his time in the last Government, Fine Gael made a commitment to children and to ensuring the prioritisation of children’s rights. ‘We saw this through the passing of the referendum, but also in the appointment of a dedicated children’s Minister, as opposed to including it in the busy Department of Health, as was the case in the past. My top priority is the provision of services for children who are fostered and adopted. Early intervention and investment in this area reaps massive dividends for the children themselves, as well as their families and communities for years to come. I look forward to working closely with the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Katherine Zappone, and indeed my colleagues of all parties and none who will sit with me on this Oireachtas Committee.’
