THE Michael Collins Museum at Emmet Square in Clonakilty will be open to the public following the official opening of the three-storey building last Saturday by the Mayor of Cork County, Cllr John Paul O’Shea.
There will be limited opening times to the public for the next few weeks, but this will be extended over the summer.
In glorious sunshine last Saturday, an invited audience of relatives, councillors and TDs got the opportunity to visit the Council-funded museum, which is dedicated to three West Cork figures – Tadgh an Asna, Jeremiah O’Donovan Rossa and Michael Collins.
Helen Collins, grandniece of Michael Collins, addressed the large crowd in attendance and gave special thanks to Cork County Council officials Justin England, Mary Ryan and project co-ordinator Billy Houlihan as well as the people of Clonakilty.
‘I don’t think my grandfather Johnny would have envisaged such a museum and I just want to thank the people of Clonakilty for this wonderful building,’ she said.
