Rachel would be ‘a first class TD'

DEPUTY First Minister Martin McGuinness described Sinn Féin’s Cork South West candidate, Rachel McCarthy, as a ‘strong young woman, committed community advocate and a determined political activist’.

Mr McGuinness was speaking in Bandon after he met with Cllr McCarthy to endorse her campaign to contest a seat in the Cork South West constituency.

‘Cllr McCarthy is an excellent candidate and she will be a first class TD for the people of Cork South West. She has proven herself to be an outstanding political representative on Cork County Council. She is driven by her genuine concern for ordinary communities and the rural towns and villages in this constituency,’ said Mr McGuinness.

Mr McGuinness was in Cork to speak at the Kinsale Peace Project but also to visit Bandon, which was badly hit by the recent flooding.

‘I am delighted to have the opportunity to strongly endorse Cllr McCarthy’s election campaign. This general election provides the people of Cork South West with the chance to break away from the traditional parties and to put their trust in Sinn Féín and Cllr McCarthy. Sinn Féin has a vision for a fair Ireland and for a better deal for rural communities. Electing Rachel would allow us to advance that vision.’

Mr McGuinness pointed out that Cllr McCarthy has an excellent track record in opposing water charges, standing against the housing crisis and campaigning for protections and reliefs for flood hit towns. He also said that Rachel would not stand over the closure of rural garda stations, post offices and the centralisation of services to urban areas.

‘This election provides an opportunity for the people of Cork South West to pass judgement on this failed government and its policies and to vote for positive change. Cllr Rachel McCarthy would work to deliver a better future for the people of this constituency,’ he said.
