SIR – It is ridiculous to make up ‘ivory tower’ international law that takes no account of historical or current reality. Whenever offered a Palestine state, Arabs junked the opportunity: six times since the 1937 Peel Report? Arabs arrogantly refuse their neighbours’ self-determination – in Jordan, Saharawi, Lebanon, Darfur ... too.

In preferring the romance of violence, Daniel Teegan (Letters, January 30th) forgets the Clauswitz advice that war is policy, inferring war stay within clear attainable policy – or be defeated in bankruptcy. Philistine-stabbing women fails, as did Fedayin village raiding in the ’50s, because you ‘catch flies with honey.’

We know from the Irish experience with Britain and grouses over Japan and Germany that gratuitous personal savagery – violence beyond direct military exchange – leaves resented ‘spanners’ in the political ‘works.’

Arab one-state policy – one Palestine state without Jews – has provoked military defeats. Now Middle Eastern oil is no longer vital to the fracking USA, it will be unwilling to pay for UNWRA and much else that floated Arab swollen heads – and Iran has already reduced subsidies to Hamas and Hizbollah as the barrel price drops.

Pointless Arab violence against Israel is now in Europe; so eventually Europe will lose patience with Moslems as in Spain and the Balkans before. The Palestine sideshow should put up and shut up before it sinks as another financial crash generalises collapse of international order.

Yours faithfully,

Frank Adam,

United Kingdom.
