The level has been steadily rising since last night’s and this morning’s heavy rain, and the crucial 2m was breached in the last hour.
There is a risk of ‘serious’ flooding just below the 2.5m mark, and a ‘severe’ risk if it breaches the crucial 3m mark.
Traders have experienced some of the worst flooding in recent memory in recent months, with two episodes of severe flooding before Christmas.
A third episode, so soon after the last, is likely to put many businesses on the breadline, as those already flooded have been unable to get insurance in recent times.
Earlier today Cork County Council issued an ‘orange alert’, suggesting there was a risk of serious flooding.
