The level of the water at Bandon Bridge is being closely monitored tonight as it has just breached the 2m level, and high tide is expected within the hour.

The level has been steadily rising since last night’s and this morning’s heavy rain, and the crucial 2m was breached in the last hour.

There is a risk of ‘serious’ flooding just below the 2.5m mark, and a ‘severe’ risk if it breaches the crucial 3m mark.

Traders have experienced some of the worst flooding in recent memory in recent months, with two episodes of severe flooding before Christmas.

A third episode, so soon after the last, is likely to put many businesses on the breadline, as those already flooded have been unable to get insurance in recent times.

Earlier today Cork County Council issued an ‘orange alert’, suggesting there was a risk of serious flooding.

Live details of the river levels are available on the flood warning system, run by Cork County Council, at www.bandonfloodwarning.ie
