A LUXURY real estate agency in Kinsale is selling a slice of island life for €300,000.

A representative of Engel & Völkers in Kinsale confirmed that €300,000 will buy you 33 acres of Long Island, off Schull, in West Cork.

This ‘large plot with considerable water frontage’ does not have a habitable house, but there are two ruins on the site that could, potentially, be redeveloped.

There has been a lot of enquires since the property came to the market – including potential buyers from Europe and Ireland. Some have even made the journey to the island by ferry to check it out and consider its potential as a retreat or even as a suitable location for a holiday development.

However, those hoping to invest will have to share it with the local population – which can be measured in single figures, a big change from the 1840s when there was an estimated 300 people living on the island.

The sales pitch is ‘beauty, tranquillity and solitude in equal measure’, but that’s not hard when the spectacular view takes in 2,000 miles of open sea.
