Met Éireann has issued a status Orange wind warning.

West to southwest winds, veering northwest, will reach mean speeds of 65-80 km/h with gusts 110-130 km/h.  This warning is valid from 3am this Saturday, October 21st, to 6pm that evening.

A status Yellow rainfall warning is currently in effect, heavy rain with accumulations of 30 to 50mm. This warning is in effect until Saturday 21st at 9pm.

Meanwhile, as already reported, a tidal surge coinciding with high tides is expected to occur this (Friday) evening, at 6pm approximately. This has the potential to cause tidal flooding across low-lying areas in Bantry, Clonakilty, Youghal and Midleton.

Cork County Council has sand bags available at Council depots for these four areas.

In light of the imminent weather warning, Cork County Council asks members of the public to avoid coastal areas and exercise extreme caution in relation to trees/structures that may have been affected by storm Ophelia.

They also request landowners to check trees on roadside boundaries which may have been affected by storm Ophelia and could pose a risk. Road users are urged to be aware overhanging tree limbs, surface water, remaining debris, etc while drains and gullies continue to be cleared by Council crews.

Trees are continuing to fall across Cork roads and are impacting on a number of previously open regional roads.  The following roads are closed:

R627 Midleton to Dungourney (expected to open later today, Friday)

R597 Glandore

R632 Ladysbridge to Garryvoe

R590 Crookstown to Macroom

Clearing of local roads continues – the remaining majority require ESB intervention.

Cork County Council’s incident line, 021-4800048, remains open and will remain open throughout the weekend.  â€¨ â€¨

Cork County Council will continue to post further updates on our twitter page @CorkCoCo and website at www.CorkCoCo.ie. Matters are being monitored and responded to on an ongoing basis.
