Belgooly celebrates 73rd annual Show on June 3rd

At the reception in the Huntsman Bar to launch the 2017 Show in front of friends and committee, chairman Mr John Stanley paid tribute to all who help each year to make Belgooly Show happen and have kept it going down through the years.

AT the reception in the Huntsman Bar to launch the 2017 Show in front of friends and committee, chairman Mr John Stanley paid tribute to all who help each year to make Belgooly Show happen and have kept it going down through the years. The chairman was heartened by the continuing goodwill of the local and wider community for Belgooly Show as without their help, assistance and support the show would not be able to operate. ‘It is a joy to witness the judging of excellent quality livestock, horses and cattle, local progeny and local produce, whilst promoting primary producers in the agricultural industry who make such a valuable contribution to the Irish economy,’ he remarked, adding a special thanks to Thomas and Linda Kiely who provide the site each year.

Chairman John Stanley thanked all the sponsors for their continued support in spite of the difficult economic situation in recent years for all firms.  He said the Prize Fund for this year’s Show will exceed €10,000.  This year’s show will feature 20 Horse classes, including three qualifiers: The Irish Shows Association and Bannow & Rathangan Show Society 3-Year-Old Filly All Ireland Championship; The Irish Shows Association and Kildysart 2-Year-Old Filly All Ireland Championship and the Irish Shows Association and Bridgetown Yearling Filly Championship. 

In the pony section there are 21 led and ridden pony classes including a new Championship Working Hunter Starter Stakes award.  

There are 25 classes in the Dairy and Beef Cattle section: Friesians, Aberdeen Angus, Belgian Blue, Hereford, Limousin and Simmentals. In conjunction with the YMA (Young Members Association) Showmanship League there are young handler classes (aged 12 and under) and (aged 13 to 16) also (aged 17 to 26). 

New for 2017— there is no show jumping at the show this year, but the addition of mounted pony games will feature as an entertaining spectacle during the show.

The Dog Show is a fun dog show which has a total of 12 classes. All dogs are welcome.Entries will taken on show day with enquiries to Eileen Ahern (see above).

There are 56 domestic classes for baking, flowers, window box, crafts, paintings, pottery, etc.  Some classes confined to primary school children, and others confined to those with special needs – no age limit.    

New for 2017 is a Trifle (one portion) and in the Photography section, categories include A Corner of Our Parish (within 5”x7”) and Sunrise or Sunset (within 5”x7”). Entries and enquiries to Sheila Foott-Kelleher (086-3627490) after 7.30 pm or email [email protected]

Children and adults are sure to enjoy the day with lots to do. Attractions include Irish dancing, Comhaltas Ballinspittle, a bouncy castle, and prizes for the Most Suitably Dressed Lady and a Bonny Baby. There will also be a  mobile pet farm and a wool spinning demonstration and willow basket making. 

Local crafts in the marquee will include furniture making, wood turning, pottery, lace making and a model farm display.  There will also be a display of vintage machinery and vintage cars with KYSS Kinsale Youth Support Services also attending.

 The bar tent is being provided by Tom and Kathleen Keogh of The Huntsman in Belgooly.
