PLANS are at an advanced stage for this year’s charity working day on the land of John Wolfe at Ardgehane, near Clonakilty, organised by West Cork Vintage Ploughing & Threshing Association, for Sunday, September 11th next.
The Year of the Deere is theme this year to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the John Deere franchise in Ireland and UK. This is the seventh event of this type organised by the association and they will have a large silage cutting demonstration by John Deere silage harvesters, from an early trailed machine accompanied by each model of self-propelled harvester to the latest 2016 models, working together in one field to show 50 years of John Deere machine development.
At least 17 John Deere machines are due to attend and each harvester will be accompanied a tractor and trailer from that era. As in previous years there will be a ploughing match to show the evolution of ploughing from horses to vintage, classic and modern tractors and ploughs. Also on the programme is a threshing and corn cutting display by a selection of machines from early trailed machines to later more modern models .
The Cullinane family of Shanaway, Ballineen, have donated a double chop silage harvester, which will be auctioned on the day and proceeds to be donated to the association’s chosen charities. A wide variety of other displays – cars, tractors, bikes, etc – will be complemented by music and entertainment and food stalls to make this a great family day out.
The well known Broomhill Tractor Builders Club, world record holders and five times All-Ireland champions will assemble a Ferguson 20. They now have a ladies team, known as the Socket Rockettes, are due to attend and demonstrate how they can assemble a tractor in about 12 minutes.
Proceeds from the event will be donated to local charities, the autism units at Kilbrittain NS and Clonakilty Gaelscoil and Aspect, an adult autism support service covering Cork and Kerry.
