A CLONAKILTY businessman, whose SPAR supermarket is currently undergoing a €250,000 refit, has been appointed chairman of the National Council of SPAR Retailers.

Ger Harte of SPAR Clonakilty, on the by-pass road, confirmed that work on the refit of his 9,000sqft premises, will be completed by July 1st and will lead to an increase in job numbers from 43 to 53.

In his new role, as chairman of the National Council of SPAR Retailers (NCSR) – which is made up 12 retailers and represents almost 400 shops around the country – Ger will be helping to develop SPAR Ireland’s overall strategy, policies and brand.

Ger, who has been in business in Clonakilty for the last 30 years, said: ‘I am delighted to be taking on the role of chairman because SPAR retailers show real determination when it comes to changing with the times and meeting the needs of its customers.’

Ger thanked his own loyal, local customers for their continued support of his business – a business that has evolved to include a full supermarket experience, a large sit down area, a bespoke bakery offering, Apache Pizzeria, a Subway sandwich bar, and a very strong deli. Ger said he is confident that the latest instore development will make Spar in Clonakilty one of the best fresh food centres in the country. ‘A return to fresh food is the future,’ he said.
