A BANDON woman is behind a new running device that is designed to keep people safe while exercising or walking alone.

‘Run Angel’ is a watch-sized device that is worn on a runner’s wrist and, when activated, sends out a high-pitched sound, loud enough to deter an attacker and to attract the attention of anyone in the area.

‘The Run Angel is also paired to your phone so that you can let family and friends know that you need help,’ co-creator of Run Angel, Ellen Caren, told The Southern Star.

Ellen, who grew up in Bandon, and her husband David, launched the Run Angel at a special event at the Irish embassy in London back in March and since then the Cork couple have received orders for their invention from countries across the globe.

‘My husband, David, came up with the idea while he was out running,’ Ellen said. ‘He noticed a female runner and a person, not in running gear, following in her direction. We spoke about the incident and came up with the idea for Run Angel.’

The new device, while ideal for runners and walkers, is also a perfect addition for those returning home from a night out or for everyday peace of mind.

Run Angel will let you assign three ‘guardians’ to your app. If you press the button a message will be sent immediately.

‘Not only will Run Angel let your guardians know that you need assistance, it will also let them know your precise location,’ Ellen said.

Ellen, who attended Timoleague National School and then Coláiste na Toirbhirte, has worked with EMI, HMV and Brown Thomas. ‘Run Angel has taken three years to develop and we are delighted with the results,’ Ellen said.

‘We are receiving orders from all over the world and we know that our product will go a long way to ensuring peace of mind – not only for those who enjoy running and walking. but for anyone who wants the added security of knowing that they are just a button press away from letting people know that they need help.’

Run Angel is on sale now from runangel.com at €99.
