Style with Carrie McKeown

AS one of Ireland's most high-profile sports stars, Bernard Brogan is more than familiar with the trials and tribulations of being part of a team, but last week it was announced that he was dipping his toe into new waters by teaming up with the fashion elite!

After joining forces with Littlewoods Ireland, the hunky GAA star is now the face of the brand-new Bernard Brogan for V by Very collection, which is built around the demands of modern day life for men. Available to purchase online, the capsule collection, which is exclusively available to Littlewoods Ireland, features the essential basics that every man needs in his wardrobe to achieve a stylish but practical everyday look. Speaking about the new line that features trend-led pieces to create a modern yet tailored feel, Bernard said: “This new collection is built around the demands of modern day life for men – offering a complete wardrobe at an accessible price from a great brand.” Discussing his involvement in the process, he added: “Keeping up with the latest trends, we carefully selected key sought-after pieces to maintain a contemporary look and feel throughout the collection.”

From a modern sports-star-turned-fashion-ambassador to those iconic figures that have defined the fashion industry in their own way, here are my top three male style icons of all time …

The Rat Pack

Nothing says style and sophistication like a man not afraid to ‘suit up' – no matter what the occasion. The likes of Conor McGregor and Irish stylist Darren Kennedy may fall into this category, but the original dapper muses for the masses simply must be The Rat Pack, a.k.a. Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr, Frank Sinatra and co. From tuxedos and sports coats to cuff links and those famous fedora hats, these men knew a thing or two about good tailoring and great presentation.

Mick Jagger

Famous for his stage presence and equally as lauded for his unique but on-point sense of style, rocker Mick Jagger has a given spot on my list. Embodying the term ‘trendsetter', the Rolling Stones frontman was ahead of his time when it came to his style preferences, unafraid to be bold with his fashion choices but arguably always landing on the cool side of risky.

David Beckham

A modern-day muse indeed and undoubtedly one who takes constant inspiration from the icons that preceded him (with a little help from his wife thrown in for good measure, one would imagine), David Beckham is a contemporary addition to the list but a deserving one.

From his effortless sex appeal with those tattooed arms emerging from a simple white tee to out-and-out sophistication in a three-piece suit with all the trimmings, this man is like a walking ‘how-to' guide when it comes to dressing to impress.
