Going forward to inter-regional rounds

Saturday July 31st, 2010

NIALL Fitzgerald, Bauravilla, as novice 1 winner and Brian O’Mahony, Rosscarbery in novice 2 join junior C champion, Donie Harnedy, as Carbery’s representatives in the forthcoming inter-regional rounds of the final championship series of 2010.

Fitzgerald’s inclusion is a surprise as he contests from the lower novice B grade but he bowled a fine score on the upper Marsh Road on Friday evening in defeating the more fancied ‘A’ winner, Pat Joe Connolly. The Rossmore man took too long to get going and Fitzgerald took ample advantage going a bowl of odds up after five. The Bauravilla man more than matched his opponent in the subsequent play and still held a shot of odds and valuable metres with it approaching ‘Coombes’. Connolly produced an explosive finish lining four outstanding last shots but Fitzgerald had enough in hand and took a deserved victory in the last throw.

Brian O’Mahony booked his passage to the county rounds with a one bowl win over novice D winner, Martin Coughlan, at Reenascreena on Saturday evening. Big second and third shots gave O’Mahony a bowl lead in the all Ross battle. Coughlan fought it well and brought the margin under the shot beyond the ‘bungalow’ but O’Mahony had that edge throughout restoring his earlier odds well before the finish. Also an award winner in the sport of rallying, O’Mahony received the novice 2 cup from Reenascreena club chairman, David O’Brien. The Ross man will play Brian Murray, who shocked the novice ‘C’ winner John Coveney in the West Cork regional play-off in the opening round of the county championship at Lyre. Niall Fitzgerald will meet either Gerard Hurley or Mike Ward and Donie Harnedy plays Aidan Hurley in the junior C grade.

Denis Collins, Bauravilla, won the vintage section A final at Grange on Wednesday. In a tough competitive contest against Mick Murphy, played for a total stake of §6,700, Collins held on for a last shot win. He will be favourite now to retain the overall title which he won last year from the B section.

The winners from the three graded categories will contest, for the outright vintage championship later in the year. Still on vintage the all Carbery section C quarter-final down the Marsh Road on Friday evening was a thriller. Steve Hayes and Liam Hurley fought it out shot for shot with Hurley’s four excellent shots from ‘Bohane’s entrance’ giving him a forty metre lead for the last shot. The Ross man, Hayes, whipped a massive last shot that won the contest by a metre.

Two more regional champions were crowned last week when the girls’ U12 and U14 competitions were concluded. Marie Nagle won the U12 championship after a great score with Rachel Whelton while Mairead O’Driscoll was given a stern test in the U14 final winning by the fore bowl from Isobel Shannon. Both girls will contest with other regional winners for county honours in the coming weeks.

At Clondrohid on Monday night last there was disappointment for Carbery’s under-age champions Shane and Mark Shannon as both lost out in the U14 and U12 championship finals. Shane, All-Ireland winner last year at U12 lost out to Damien O’Gorman from the South West region in the U14 final. It was a cracking contest that showed both boys at their best. Shane Shannon is eligible for the grade again next year.

Evan Murphy of Ballyclough defeated Mark Shannon in the U12 final on Monday night. The Carbery champion gave it his all on the evening but his North East rival had the edge throughout.

In club action the Paddy Barry Cup continued at Rosscarbery when the fourth quarter-final fixture was played. Bantry’s Donal O’Riordan turned in a top class display winning by close on two bowls from Willie O’Donovan. The semi-final draw is: O’Riordan v John Creedon and Eamonn Bowen v James O’Donovan.
