2010 championship season gets under way
CARBERY’S 2010 championship season got underway with a flurry of activity at various venues.
Schull had its first major fixture since re-forming under the auspices of Willie McCarthy and his team. Noel Dempsey and Pat Hodnett played the opening score in the junior C championship and it drew a handy crowd to the region’s most westerly road.
It was Dempsey, upgraded after his novice 1 success last year, who gained the victory and the first point in the league format under which the championship is being run this year. It was hard earned for the Bauravilla man as Hodnett had the upper hand for periods and indeed had a small chance of glory two shots up approaching the ‘bridge’.
The Ballydehob man’s early advantage came mainly through a brilliant shot as the road narrowed but he failed to keep the momentum going over the last quarter. Dempsey knocked the odds with a big third last and forged ahead to win the score in the final shots. Hodnett has scores against Neil Crowley, Donie Harnedy, Patrick O’Sullivan and Tony O’Sullivan to re-ignite his title chances.
In novice veteran Robbie Limrick ousted a leading contender when defeating Donal Harnedy at Leap. It was a last shot victory for the Union Hall man. At Leap too, Liam O’Driscoll showed good form in eliminating Jim Kearney in the novice veteran championship. The Skibb man had a bowl of odds to spare at the end.
In the same grade there was a welcome return to action for Christy O’Donovan. Winner in 2003, O’Donovan showed no ill effects of a year’s lay-off from the game when scoring an unexpected win over Castletownshend’s Pat Collins, in a Saturday score at Bauravilla.
On Sunday morning Willie McCarthy, Schull, advanced in the novice veteran at the expense of Gary Coughlan in a first round fixture at the Marsh Road.
In club scores there was disappointment for Carbery followers at the Marsh Road on Saturday as Michael Bohane let a good lead slip in the closing stages of his Connie O’Sullivan tournament score with David Hubbard. Bohane lost his advantage to Hubbard’s massive shot from Ballyhilty corner and, despite a spirited attempt to regain the initiative, was forced to concede the semi-final spot to his North Cork rival.
Hubbard plays Ian Callinan in the penultimate round of the O’Sullivan Cup. Carbery’s Liam O’Sullivan has qualified for the final.
Carbery’s under-21 tournament final will be a family affair after brothers Kieran and David Shannon qualified for the decider. Saturday’s contest between David Shannon and Finbarr Coughlan was an exciting battle that the Caheragh youth led at the bridge. Shannon unleashed a big shot at this point and it turned the score in his favour. Kieran Shannon had a bowl of odds to spare on Aidan Shannon in Sunday’s penultimate round clash.
In an all-Carbery International Fund score at Drinagh, John O’Brien defeated Michael Crowley by almost a bowl. It was a cracking score played out from the village. Crowley’s one error, in the shots to the ‘rectory gates’, was punished by the Ballydehob man who was in top form. Also in Drinagh another all Carbery confrontation, a Keating Cup fixture, resulted in victory for Pat Joe Connolly over his Union Hall adversary, Jimmy Collins. Connolly’s bowling was close to O’Brien’s exellent showing earlier in the day.
Emma Fitzpatrick just missed out on qualification for Bol-Chumann’s international team for Holland finishing just off fourth place. Mike White qualified for the Rosscarbery novice D tournament final by virtue of a one bowl victory over Bertie Poole.
Carbery’s junior A championship commences on Saturday next at Ballydehob when defending champion Dec O’Donovan takes on J.C. Desmond in what is a repeat of last year’s Marsh Road final.
