Good year reviewed at AGM
CARBERY’s AGM on Monday night last drew a good gathering of representatives from seven of the region’s eight clubs and a significant development was the return to senior officership of former secretary and Bol Chumann secretary as well, Pat O’Sullivan, Rosscarbery.
Richie Fitzgerald vacated the role of chairman after a productive and often testing ten year term and the Rosscarbery man was elected unopposed in his place. The meeting heard detailed and well presented reports from secretary William O’Brien and treasurer Vincent O’Mahony. Youths’ officer Dan McCarthy, whose sterling work was seen in two of the region’s champions, winning Munster and All-Ireland honours, gave a detailed review of operations under his remit.
PRO Pat McCarthy and registrar and fixtures secretary, Con Twohig also made contributions on what was generally a very successful year’s bowling within the region.
Tributes were paid to the outgoing chairman with Con Twohig particularly remarking on his huge input into all aspects of bowling within Carbery and previously the West Cork Bowling Association. James O’Driscoll, Ból-Chumann, thanked the region and presided over the election of officers.
Denis Collins, Bauravilla, is the outright vintage champion for 2009. The Carbery man had a good throw to beat the finish line and did so by fifteen metres depriving Tom Hayes who had just missed from a long way back of a late chance. The third contender, Haulie O’Mahony, finished almost a bowl adrift. Collins’ huge second last shot gave him valuable metres for the last exchanges.
Tom Hayes had twice overhauled good leads held by the Bauravilla man but was hampered by injury over the closing stages. For Collins it was a merited victory and he is the first from Carbery to win the vintage championship. The competition, which is dedicated to the over sixties age group, had, at the outset, over sixty entrants competing in three sections.
Denis O’Driscoll advanced to the semi-final round of the Marsh Road club’s junior A tournament after a comprehensive win over Donncha O’Brien on Sunday last. The contest between the leading West Cork divisional exponents drew a big gathering to the Carbery venue and was going very much O’Brien’s way in the early stages. Four big opening shots had the Drinagh man in front by almost a bowl before O’Driscoll turned it around with three massive efforts from the ‘quarry entrance’.
These not only overhauled O’Brien’s lead but brought him light at the ‘steps’ a shot up. O’Driscoll powered on from there and another huge cast from ‘Ballyhilty’ doubled his lead. His semi-final opponent will come from the remaining quarter-final clash involving John Cahalane and Ger Fitzpatrick. Brian Wilmot is in the final.
Rosscarbery’s Tim Joe O’Mahony made a bold bid to win the Fr. Crowley Cup at Drinagh on Saturday but went under at the end to hot favourite Martin O’Neill. A shock looked on the cards when O’Mahony, having won back the lead with a good shot to the ‘rectory gates’ took a nice advantage with a grand effort around ‘Kennedy’s wall’.
O’Neill rescued himself with a brilliant bowl to the ‘blacksticks’ to keep it level. O’Mahony continued to press and followed big shots to the ‘pond’ where little separated them. Still little in it for the last shots, O’Neill won it with a huge throw over the line. His reward was the Fr. Crowley Cup and §500 first prize. O’Mahony’s runner-up spot earned him §200 and a glass trophy while beaten semi-finalists Tommy Murphy and Johnny Hourihane received §100 each.
Other tournament action in Carbery saw Pat Hodnett score a one bowl win over Con O’Sullivan at Ballydehob and Pat Collins edge out fellow veteran Timmie Hennessy in the Rosscarbery novice B competition.
Inadvertently omitted from the list of sponsors of the Rosscarbery under-age tournament completed on bank holiday Monday were Dan O’Sullivan, Barleyhill, the Carbery region, and Tim Pat O’Donovan. Dan along with Mick Russell and Seamus Cussen was among the instigators of these very successful annual competitions.
There was a good turn out again at Reenascreena on Sunday morning last for the second under-age bowling session. At its conclusion Pat McCarthy presented the region’s top performers at under-age level, Mairead O’Driscoll, Shane Shannon and Michelle Ryan with an inscribed watch each in honour of their achievements.
Reverting to Monday’s AGM, the officers elected to serve the region for 2010 are as follows: chairman, Pat O’Sullivan, Rosscarbery; vice-chairman, Sean O’Donovan; secretary, William O’Brien; assistant secretary, Patie O’Sullivan; treasurer, Vincent O’Mahony; assistant treasurer, Michael Crowley; fixtures secretary and registrar, Con Twohig; youths’ officer, Dan McCarthy; assistant, John Joe O’Driscoll; PRO, Pat McCarthy; female youths’ officer, Marguerite Crowley and Kay O’Sullivan; delegates to monthly meetings, Joe Carroll, Jerry Murphy and Willie McCarthy; delegates to convention, Roy Shannon, Michael Crowley and Finbarr Lynch. Richie Fitzgerald took the post as the region’s president. Vice-presidents are Gary Coughlan and Billy Ryan.
