Whale stranded in Baltimore has died

A fin whale, estimated to be up to 50ft long, which had been stranded against the pier wall in Baltimore Harbour since early on Tuesday morning, has died.

The huge marine mammal beached early on Tuesday morning shortly after being spotted making its way through moorings in the harbour.

Experts who were monitoring the situation came to the conclusion quickly that the whale was most likely sick or distressed before becoming stranded in Baltimore harbour and that the prognosis was not good. They were never optimistic that the whale could be saved.

The whale was removed from the inner harbour area in Baltimore this afternoon (Thursday).
