Castlehaven footballer knew instantly he had ripped his hamstring again

CORK footballer Brian Hurley is facing up to 14 months on the sidelines after his latest hamstring injury.

In a club game last weekend the Castlehaven forward (24) suffered another serious injury to the same hamstring he ripped off the bone last July at a Cork training session.

While this rupture is not as bad as the original injury, it is in the same area and his hamstring’s poor condition means that surgery is not a viable option.

Hurley pulled up during the second half of Castlehaven’s recent Division 1 FL loss to Ballingeary and he knew instantly he was in big trouble.

‘I ruptured all the bottom of the hamstring and tore muscle around it pretty badly; I did hear ripping again and that was obviously that,’ Hurley told The Southern Star.

‘My surgeon told me it isn’t advisable to operate on it again so I can’t get surgery on the leg anymore because the hamstring is in such poor condition.

‘The top of the hamstring that was reattached the last time is quite good, there’s no real issue with that side whereas there is with the bottom of it. I’ve to wait now for six weeks, to hopefully leave it heal instead of surgery because going down the road of surgery would be madness. If I tighten the hamstring again it would more than likely snap.’

Hurley confirmed that he is facing at least a year on the sideline as this rehab will take a lot longer than the first hamstring injury.

If he came through the club game last weekend, he was scheduled to have been involved in the Cork panel for today's Division 2 clash with Meath that finished in a draw.
