Q. If you could relive one sporting moment from the past year, what would it be and why?

On a personal level, has to be walking out in Croke Park for the first time against Donegal. Although the result was hugely disappointing, the memory of walking out of the tunnel, on to the pitch and playing will live with me forever. Even if I never got to do it again, it’s something to cherish.

Q. Picture this: Olympic silver medallists Gary and Paul O’Donovan are in a 100m sprint on land – who wins and why?

Running conditions would be key, Gary would be more suited to the track, Paul would have the advantage in the long grass. Gary strikes me as a Tyson Gay type sprinter, whereas Paul looks more like a Yohan Blake style runner. But I’ll put a blue one on Gary to take this one! (Depending on the bookies’ odds)

Q. What will you miss most about 2016?

Barack Obama being president, free trade with the UK and Katie Hopkins being wrong.

Q. Describe Conor McGregor in one word:

Unprecedented!

Q. Outside of your sport, what sporting moment from 2016 captured your imagination?

Has to be Gary and Paul winning silver at the Olympics. Loved every minute of it. From the races, to the interviews, to the homecoming. A truly unique and remarkable achievement.

Q. How do you usually spend New Year’s Eve?

It varies, one year I’ll be out for a late one with the lads or my girlfriend, the next I’ll be lying on the couch watching a Gilmore Girls omnibus. There’s no grey area, has to be one or the other.

Q. If you could go for New Year’s Eve drinks with three sports people – local, national or international – who would you pick?

The O’Donovan brothers have to come, but only if they count as one person? Surely you can’t have one without the other and I can’t afford to give up two spots. Dilemma! Under the presumption they count as one, Conor McGregor is obviously coming, and a toss of a coin between Paul O’Connell and Brian O’Driscoll, but I’ll give the Munster man the nod.

Q. What local sports star should we keep an eye on next year?

Donal Óg Hodnett, no pressure now bud!

Q. Any advice to get over the January blues?

Take a trip to South America from January 1st to January 31st. It’s financially viable, there should be no issue with your employer and it will convert your blues to a sensitive shade of mauve. If you can’t manage the trip a couple of Panadol will have a similar effect.

Q. Finish the sentence: In 2017 I want to ….

become a county champion with O’Donovan Rossa, and a Munster and All-Ireland champion with Cork. Nothing too special! Oh, and also encourage President Trump to resist the lure of that ‘BIG RED BUTTON’ under his desk. That’s how it works, right?
