CLONAKILTY Chamber of Commerce's application for a Greenway trail from the town to the Technology Park has been approved by Cork County Council.

The project consists of a 6km cycleway, as well as pedestrian access from the SuperValu roundabout in Clonakilty, to the Technology Park, which is located on the eastern approach road to the town.

Christopher O'Sullivan, chairperson of the business organisation, said the project will now be submitted to the Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht affairs (DAHG), along with 15 other projects for funding.

‘This is a huge step forward in having the project considered for funding under the town and village renewal scheme,' said the Fianna Fáil councillor, ‘and we hope the funding will be forthcoming before the year is out.'

Cllr O'Sullivan said the Cycleway would be ‘an invaluable asset' in Clonakilty, a town that is ‘becoming famous, both nationally and internationally as a tourism destination'.

An added benefit of providing such an amenity, according to Cllr O'Sullivan, is that it will provide safe access to the employees at the Technology Park because many of the 1,000 employees are making the dangerous journey along the N71 on foot on a daily basis.
