Ballydehob publican Joe O'Leary said: ‘This is a call to arms: all the single men, sign up for First Tastes in May.'

THE fairer sex is obviously the braver sex too, because not one man put his name forward for a blind date event that was supposed to take place in Ballydehob last week.

First Tastes – which was due to take place at Levis Corner House – had to be cancelled after 20 women signed up for a blind date but not one man had the gumption to register.

Joe O’Leary of Levis’ said the organisers, Ciaran Meade and Jack Crotty, had run a similar event during the 2016 Body & Soul festival and it was a huge success with full houses every day.

‘They felt they could bring their skills to West Cork,’ said Joe, ‘but alas they didn’t get the chance.’

Ideally, he said the participants who had signed up online would have been matched-up and invited to enjoy a three-course meal together at the pop-up restaurant.

‘But what they got was 20 applicants – women looking for men, not women looking for women – although, at one stage, we did think about pairing them up, but they had no interest.

‘It’s strange,’ said Joe, ‘I know for a fact that there are plenty of single men living here because I know them all.’

The women were mainly from West Cork – with just a few indicating a willingness to travel down from Cork city – and they ranged in ages from 22 to one lady in her 60s.

He admitted he was disappointed when Ciaran rang on Friday morning to cancel Saturday’s event, but is glad that they are going to give it another go in May, possibly May 1st.

As an aside, Joe also confirmed: ‘Ciaran is in his 30s, single and successful. He has all his own teeth – one slightly discoloured – a full head of hair, and comes from good farming stock.’
