MINISTER for Agriculture Michael Creed visited Bandon Grammar School to give a talk to agricultural science, biology and home economics students.

‘He left students in no doubt that there is a great future ahead of us in Irish agriculture, which will bring opportunities for everyone, both in and out of the farm gate,’ said English teacher John O’Regan.

The minister, from Macroom, impressed upon the students the importance of the agricultural sector to Ireland’s economy and how Ireland was leading the way in productivity and efficiency in supplying the world.

‘From infant formula to China, milk to Algeria, and whiskey to America, the Irish are the benchmark when it comes to quality and sustainability, he said,’ Mr O’Regan added. ‘Minister Creed told students that our dedicated and educated young people were at the heart of all this, developing new products, applying new techniques and reaching new markets.’

The minister also highlighted the many opportunities for young people outside the farm gate as well, in terms of research, marketing and processing.  He also explained that Ireland is rising to meet the challenge of these turbulent times.

‘Students were clearly impressed with the array and intensity of the work undertaken by the minister. Working with his Northern Ireland and English counterparts on Brexit, meetings in Brussels, trade missions to North Africa and Asia along with business in the Dáil meant that there was very little time left in a week to draw breath,’ he said.

Minister Creed was joined on his visit by his colleague, Cork South-West Fine Gael TD Jim Daly.
